10/29/14 » Vol. IX, Iss. 39

Happy Halloween and Dia De Los Muertos! It's getting close to that time of year when we take a break from charts and spins—but an influx of good stuff is still on the way before the lull. Checked out a few shows this week: Alt J, Lovelife, Bear Hands, Fences and The Preatures. If you get a chance to catch any of them on tour, DO IT!

Kasabian’s new album, 48:13, just came out on Harvest Records, and I had a chance to talk to Sergio Pizzorno of the band about the album, their career and hopes of dominating the US of A.

0019: This is exciting! You guys have been doing this for more than ten years—your debut album came out in 2004—and everything since then, back home, has gone platinum, right? You guys are top-selling in the UK, and you had a really big year headlining one of the big festivals back home.

Serg: Yeah, yeah, yeah, like the rest of the world, we're kind of a big deal but here in the (U.S.) not so much; you're playing hard to get. You're the last piece of the puzzle. But you know what happened, we didn't come to the States for five years, as the label we were on previously didn't have any interest in us whatsoever. I think we felt that, like we're five years behind in the States. We're playing catch up a bit. But on the other hand, the gigs are always incredible, and the fans we do have here are sort of insane.

0019: You do have fans all over the States.

Serg: That's what I'm saying, so it's kind of amazing, and I can't complain; I'm certainly not puffed up with self importance to think we deserve to be any bigger than we are you know? The gigs are incredible.

0019: You are an amazing band, and I have been following you guys your entire career. You produced the new album, 48:13 (the running time of the album) and each track title is titled as it's respective running time. Do the songs have titles?

Serg: Yeah, well, if you look on the back, the song titles are there. For a moment, we toyed with just giving them numbers, but felt it might be a step too far. The reason behind the name is we sort of had a vision to keep everything direct, the music, lyrics and artwork. So the title had to be that. We weren't trying to be clever or cool, it's certainly not that. In the spirit of how the record was made, we just gave it a number, that's the running time, that's the facts, no bullshit.
